The Inverloch Community Hub - Amazon Shipwreck Display
Tuesday 9th August - Wednesday 31st August
The Amazon was built at St Helier on the island of Jersey, in the Channel Islands, in 1855. For eight years Amazon travelled the world delivering cargoes of flour, sugar, and coal.
In December 1863, the Amazon departed Port Phillip heading for Mauritius. Near Apollo Bay, Captain Ogier claimed they encountered a fierce storm, a hurricane which blew the Amazon east. The crew tried to enter Port Phillip to no avail and the Amazon was blown further east to Inverloch where it hit flat rocks. Masts were cut down and the ship was beached where it remains today on the Inverloch Surf Beach.
As part of the August display, Heritage Victoria Maritime Archaeologists will visit the Inverloch Community Hall on: Saturday 20 August and deliver two lectures on the Amazon Shipwreck. 10:00am-12:00pm then 1:00pm onwards. Come and chat to Danielle, Liam and Annie and share anything about the Amazon Shipwreck.
Locals are invited to bring any Amazon artifacts they may have for cataloging and will be encouraged to ask questions and learn more about the Amazon Shipwreck from these maritime specialists.
Learn step by step guide to catalogue your artefact at home.
